Originally published on the International Go Federation’s Ranka Online: ITALY-MEXICO: Three Weak Groups When Cristiano Garbarini 1d of Italy creates three weak groups early in his 6th-round game against Emil Garcia Bustamante 4d of Mexico, it’s no surprise that one of them winds up in trouble. Garbarini gets to save it in ko when Bustamante misses the vital killing point, but promptly gets himself in trouble again with another group. Bustamente, says Michael Redmond 9P in his commentary, offers Garbarini one more chance to get back into the game, moving aggressively when he’s got a weak group himself. But Garbarini sets up an early resignation when he tries to take advantage of what looks like an oversight by Bustamente but instead plays right into a gaeta. ] ;W[dp];B[qp];W[dc];B[fq];W[cn];B[kq];W[qj] C[so far it's a pretty common opening];B[pk];W[qk];B[pl] C[best to crawl at b] (;W[qg];B[ql] C[this is probably too good for B; not only does it make a nice moyo but W's shape is cramped] ;W[lp];B[kp];W[lo];B[jn];W[lm];B[jl];W[lk];B[pj];W[pi];B[oi];W[ph];B[oq] ;W[rp] C[this move sometimes works but in this case it doesn't; B can just kill W with b; see variation] (;B[ro] C[this gives W too many possibilities]LB[qq:A];W[qo];B[po];W[qn];B[rn];W[pn] ;B[rl];W[pp];B[qq];W[oo];B[pq] C[this is actually a fairly reasonable sequence; B is gaining by attacking the right side, but W is gaining thickness to help his center grp; kind of a give and take.
